In this week’s look at real estate abroad on Forbes Global Properties, my search landed on three distinctly different homes for sale France, Hong Kong and Hawai’i. From a chalet-style home on the banks of Lake Geneva to a bachelor-ready residence in the wealthy Mid-Levels area of Hong Kong, here’s a look at what about $13 million buys right now in the international housing market.
Messery, Haute-Savoie, France
Located in Messery, a commune in the Haute-Savoie region of the French Alps, this charming chalet-style home sits on more than 12 park-like acres abutting Lake Geneva. Gabled rooflines with wide eaves, balconies and hand-carved flourishes define the home’s timeless exterior. Inside, living spaces display an artisan’s touch and feature beautiful hardwood floors and fine millwork.
Features: High ceilings with exposed beams lend a refined note to the public rooms, including a grand receiving room with a fireplace on the main floor. A total of six bedrooms and five bathrooms are spread throughout the two-story floor plan, including corner bedrooms perfectly positioned to take in the lake.
Other perks: Some 400 meters of private beachfront along Lake Geneva add to the roughly 6,500-square-foot chateau’s appeal. A jetty and boat garage complete the lakefront offering.
Makena, Maui, Hawai’i
Called Hale Makana Ola, this custom compound overlooking the sapphire-blue waters of Ahihi Bay combines Balinese-inspired details with a range of high-end amenities. Designed for year-round living, 16-foot-wide pocketing glass walls seamlessly blend indoor-outdoor living spaces. Elsewhere on the property is a detached Ohana — known to many on the mainland as an accessory dwelling unit — provides additional flexibility.
Features: Designed by Maui-based architect Jim Niess, the home’s open-concept layout features a vaulted-ceiling great room and a chef’s kitchen with two islands that adjoins a casual entertainment area. The main living spaces open directly to a lanai that wraps around much of the home’s exterior.
Other perks: A heated saltwater spa provides the perfect spot for taking in the sights of Ahihi Bay. Elsewhere on the lush property is a heated lap swimming pool with an infinity-edge.
Price: $12.99 million
Mid-Levels East, Hong Kong
Regarded as one of the world’s priciest housing markets, Hong Kong’s Mid-Levels area is known for being a vibrant cultural destination full of trendy art galleries, restaurants, and high-end boutique shops. This residence, located within the desirable Chantilly luxury development, pays homage to the area’s youthful energy with a mix of fanciful details.
Features: Originally designed as a three-bedroom residence, the home now features one expanded bedroom suite complete with a glamorous walk-in wardrobe and a private study. Accent lighting creates a playful mood in the main living area, incorporating a wet bar and a platform for a grand piano.
Other perks: A living wall and ornamental vines hung from exposed rafters lend a relaxed note to the bedroom and primary bathroom. The galley-style kitchen is equipped with high-end appliances, custom cabinetry and a wealth of counter space.
