Glass Penthouse In The Honolulu Sky Seeks $5.3 Million

This three-story home atop a Honolulu skyscraper has the feel of a glass-domed luxury zephyr stationed high above the city. Or that of a first-class double-deck of a jet airplane. Or even a windowed observation deck aboard an ocean liner.

None of those similarities are by accident.

The tubular residence, with its rounded glass walls, was created for longtime developer Bruce Stark and his wife, Carol, to offer them a bird’s-eye view on his world. Stark is credited with shaping much of Honolulu’s skyline with such defining high-rise projects as the Wailana at Waikiki condominiums, the Yacht Harbor Towers residential project and One Waterfront Towers, where this residence is perched.

The Art Deco-inspired interiors of the penthouse seem a fitting match. The style reveled in humanity’s technological progress, imbuing it with a sense of excitement and glamour.

Etched glass and mirrors, handcrafted African hardwood cabinetry and furniture, black Italian granite flooring and countertops, artisan glasswork and a see-through stairwell are among the details.

The living space includes a private elevator, an open-plan dining room with a bar, a home theater, an office, two bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. The wood and glass walk-in clothes closet is practically a room unto itself. The U-shaped kitchen, glossy black with red accents, features task lighting and opens to a breakfast area. Wine storage sits nearby.

One thing the atrium-like penthouse is not is a hot box. The 4,475-square-foot residence is equipped with custom-built Mechoshade solar panels. The automated window coverings help control the amount of light and heat entering the home.

Priced at $5.3 million, 415 South #4502, takes in views of the city, ocean and mountains, capturing both the sunrise and the sunset. At night, a canopy of stars is visible above.

The residence is at the top of Makai Tower, one of the two tinted-glass high-rises making up One Waterfront Towers, which was built in 1989 and completed the following year. The mixed-use twin towers contain 306 residential units and span 45 stories.

Ann T. Kwock of Hawai’i Life, a member of Forbes Global Properties, is the listing agent for the fully furnished unit, which includes four parking spots.
