Mountain Architecture traces its roots to the early settlers, the Old West and ranch living.
The once primitive style was a response to the environment and used the natural materials at hand, incorporating the earthy tones of the surroundings. Today, the rustic look has taken on a more elegant appearance in mountain resort areas.
This luxury retreat in the heart of the Rocky Mountains is within The Ranch at Cordillera, one of four gated resort enclaves near Edwards, Colorado.
So named because the land was at one point a working ranch, the neighborhood encompasses meadowland and mature forests. Homes within The Ranch feature materials such as stone, logs and lumber and are designed in keeping with the community’s early American West vibe.
Set on more than 2 acres, the custom residence takes in vistas of the granite-topped Gore Range, pine trees and aspen groves.
Outdoor decks and patios provide front-row seats to view the activity in the adjacent wildlife corridor, where elk, deer and the occasional bear are sometimes seen.
Rock at the home’s base appears to ground it to the site. Wood siding on the upper levels lends a timeless, traditional mountain feel. Wood ornamentation and gable windows add visual interest to the steep shake roof.
A floor-to-ceiling moss rock fireplace in the living room features a stone hearth and a thick wooden mantelpiece. Banks of windows extend to the vaulted ceiling, which features artfully carved beams. There’s also a wet bar.
The adjacent dining room centers on a two-story picture window. Cabinetry topped by counters flank the space. Glass-fronted display cabinets create separation from a sitting area with a corner fireplace.
The kitchen features a center island, tile backsplashes and a beamed ceiling. A rotunda sun room creates a breakfast nook.
A turret library opens to a study and the primary suite, which has a fireplace, two bathrooms and dual closets.
A second bedroom suite with a turret-topped sitting area is upstairs. The ground level has three additional bedrooms for a total of five bedrooms and five bathrooms within the 6,391 square feet of living space.
Among community amenities are a recreation center, a swimming pool, a fly-fishing pond, a golf course and miles of hiking and winter sports trails. Racquetball, tennis and equestrian facilities are also available.
