Take a moment, and think of some of the large-scale master paintings of the art world: Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus,” Seurat’s “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” Picasso’s “Guernica.”

Perhaps Monet’s “Water Lilies” series is more to your liking — strung together, it would be a nearly 300-foot-long canvas.

Now, imagine a thousand-acre blank canvas. This canvas, The Acreage at Sound Point, Eleuthera, is waiting for you.

Consisting of 2,000 acres at the southern end of one of the most stunning islands in the Bahamas, the Acreage overlooks the pristine blue waters of the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the stunning underwater topography of the Great Bahama Bank to the west.

“This is a very special property,” says Rhonda Waton of MAISON Bahamas,” unique in its size, length and overall features.

“Rock Sound Point is a broad peninsula that, by geography, creates the sandy bottom safe harbor of Rock Sound. The beach, facing due west, is over 4 miles long of fine white sand, shallow waters — at low tide, you can walk a good distance out.” says Watson. As far as development goes, this sandy harbor gives the Acreage the advantage of a protected safe harbor for a marina.

Eleuthera, a short hop by air to Nassau, is 110 miles long and as little as a mile wide in spots. The Queens Highway runs the length of the island and offers access to small towns, ports and marinas. The island has three airports; Rock Sound International (RSD) is the closest to the property.

Taking a drive along Queens Highway showcases a unique landscape of pink sand beaches, untouched coral reefs, jagged cliffs, and more. Travelers’ favorite stops, to name just a few, include the Sapphire Blue Hole, an underwater cave with amazingly clear water; the Queen’s Bath with its rugged rocks and crashing waves; and the Glass Window Bridge, only about 30 feet wide at its narrowest point. At the northern end of the island, it is a five-minute water taxi ride to Harbour Island and its charming Dunmore Town, a quaint seaside village with wonderful New England-style architecture.

The Acreage at Sound Point, Eleuthera, now being offered for U.S. $23 million, is a spectacular property in a spectacular setting. “There is no comparable property on this island, of this magnitude, that has the beach and harbor for incredible development potential,” says Waton. “It must be seen in person and felt; it is an incredibly convenient paradise.”

The 1,000 acres that are buildable can be “the foundation for fabulous development,” stresses Waton, who mentions luxury residences or hotels as examples of the many options. “The land itself has endless possibilities.”

There’s that blank canvas again.

A blank canvas that offers the freedom that is the veritable meaning of Eleuthera, derived from the Greek adjective for “free.”

Rock star Lenny Kravitz, perhaps the island’s most famous resident, knows the feeling. “On Eleuthera,” he explained to Travel & Leisure magazine, he lives a simple life: “Where I am, there’s nothing, which is what’s beautiful about it. It’s more raw … you’re going to feel yourself. … It’s a place where you free yourself.
