One could wonder if the sky’s the limit in Dubai – because the ritzy city crowning the United Arab Emirates has certainly not been limited by the sea.

This nearly US $49-million triplex penthouse is perched atop the Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences on Palm Jumeirah, a manmade archipelago shaped (you guessed it) like a palm tree. Bordered by white sand beaches, the artificial island community didn’t exist 20 years ago.

Set amid luxury hotels, retails stores, upscale restaurants and apartments, the Royal Atlantis has a prominent location on the crescent – as opposed to the truck or fronds – of the palm. And building’s dramatic architecture makes it hard to miss.

The structure itself almost defies description. Set on a gentle S-shaped base, the floors bring to mind a partially played Jinga game. Blocks of the building are vacant, creating open air space in an almost lacy pattern.

The groupings of two, three or four floors are not stacked directly on top of each other but offset to enhance the seemingly zigzag nature of the curved structure.

Floor-to-ceiling windows bring light into the penthouse’s open-plan living space, where living, dining and kitchen areas flow into each other.

In addition to the main living spaces are a study, a gym, a sauna and a steam room.

Staff facilities include a maid’s room and a driver’s room. The interiors total 16,486 square feet, which includes five bedrooms and six bathrooms. Details include marble, carpeted and solid wood floors.

Including balcony and private terrace space, there are 25,206 square feet of living area.

Parking for four vehicles comes with the penthouse.

While the Royal Atlantis has communal pools, the penthouse has its own swimming pool as well. Clear railings enhance views from the private pool area, which has both open sky and sheltered lounging areas.

Vistas from the penthouse take in the Dubai skyline and the ocean. A green belt with palm trees, fountains and water elements stretches toward the beach.

The penthouse is listed for sale with Kianoush Darban of Driven Properties. Ownership transfer is expected to be available starting in December.

Royal Atlantis Resort & Residences offers the requisite luxury resort amenities. On-site gourmet restaurants feature the food of such chefs as Gordon Ramsay, Jose Andres and Heston Blumenthal.

Palm Jumeirah, covering 560 hectares or nearly 1,400 acres of land, is accessible by roads, a monorail, tunnels and boat.
