Stunning 11th c. Catalan Chateau
Become the new guardians of this place steeped in history, preserve a jewel of Catalan heritage, enjoy the Mediterranean art of living in a magical and secret location, perhaps fulfill a childhood dream?
On a rocky piton dominating the valley, with hectares of fruit trees and vines and a view of the Mediterranean Sea, the Cathar castles and the Pyrenees, lies this 11th c. listed chateau. Its location recounts the history of Roussillon through the centuries as a sentinel facing the border of the Kingdom of France. It has been restored and magnified by the current owner.
Assailed many times, it bears the stigma of the cannonballs embedded in its reconstruction. Originally a simple keep, it was fortified for centuries and then converted into a private residence, with many spaces hidden from the outside.
With approximately 17 acres of land, it is surrounded by woods, a walkway, a garden planted with trees and flowers, an adjoining listed chapel with the ruins of the old village at its feet.
It has a manageable size, with 6,996 sq.ft. on 3 levels, 7 bedrooms, as many bathrooms, a separate B&B on the ground floor with 2 bedrooms, a dining room in the chapter house, offices and boudoirs, and a large library on the top floor with a fireplace and a sea view.
It has been entirely renovated with due respect to the medieval style and spirit of the place and with modern comforts: heated swimming pool with pool-house and a bar in the old dungeon, projection room in the arms room, patio with a fountain on the roof of the keep. Many openings and doors have been fitted, preserving some loopholes and with new stained-glass windows. It is particularly bright and comfortable for a medieval building. Some rooms can be converted.
Imagine yourselves waking up on a summer morning in the white room on the first floor, facing the sea, watching the light through the stained-glass windows of the chapter house into the kitchen, having breakfast on the balcony above the garden, to the sound of the birds and the fountain, with a view of the forest and the chapel. Then go down to the swimming pool for a swim, enjoying the flowers in the garden, having a meal in the shade of the buttresses, take a nap in the coolness of the arms room or under a tree, go for a walk in the surrounding woods, invite friends for an aperitif in the patio by the fountain on the roofs, admire the sunset over the Pyrenees and then the stars from the terrace of the keep. Finally, relax by the fireplace in the living room or in front of a film in the cinema room, read a book in an alcove of the library... Enjoy all this while being the keeper of one of the jewels of Roussillon's heritage
