When this classic shingle-style house was built in 1929, the newly discovered resort town of Oswego was a suburban paradise where the lake was the main attraction for people wanting to ‘live where you play’ as the developer’s slogan said. Today, nearly 100 years later, in a world where so much has changed, the house, once alone on a hill in the Uplands neighborhood, now sits in the middle one of the most desirable neighborhoods of Lake Oswego that still attracts urban-weary residents who want a to live the lake lifestyle in a small-town atmosphere.

Completely reimagined for a new century, this home and guest cottage retain their vintage charm with the addition of luxurious, modern finishes and features create a warm and inviting atmosphere. With a layout ideal for entertaining and hosting friends and family, this home has a traditional, timeless design as appealing and relevant today as it was when it was built.

Ten months of extensive renovations overseen by Lake Oswego’s most sought-after designer Phil Chek & Associates have culminated in fresh, carefully-crafted spaces that will endure for the next 100 years. One of the most dramatic transformations took place in the guest cottage. Originally a separate garage, the guest house is a perfect cottage for in-laws, visitors, a studio, or a small company headquarters. The two-story cottage features a main floor living area with a newly-enlarged kitchen and large full bath. New granite countertops and hardwood floors coupled with shutters crafted from the original cabinetry and handmade doors custom built to fit the 1900s doorways create a space with vintage character and modern convenience. Upstairs, new dormers bring natural light to the former attic that now houses two sleeping areas.

Outside, the level stone patio was extended to wrap around the guest cottage and enlarged to create a great entertaining space between it and the main house. Freshly painted shake shingles form the exterior of both buildings dotted with window boxes and new cedar porticos marking the entryways. New low-maintenance landscaping and custom-made railings lead up walkways on either side of the main house with custom-built gates in place to secure the patio for pets. Just off the walkway leading to the front door is a separate patio overlooking the front of the home. Be sure to look for the vintage bootscrape and brick with the name ‘Hidden’ embossed on the patio, a memento from the original brick company.

Step inside the front door into the vestibule where you’ll find original green floor tiles, patinaed with age and the perfect first impression of this historic home. Wide, arched entryways divide the large living room from the formal dining room, both of which enjoy a stunning view of the tall trees extending down hill. Beautiful hardwood floors, original to the home and carefully maintained span both rooms. A new vintage-inspired woodburning fireplace was installed in the living room and the thick wooden mantle was hand-made on site. The dining room features French doors that lead outside to a composite deck that overlooks the front-drive. A stunning new globe-style Otto Collection by Hubbardton Forge chandelier hangs above the dining room table, elevating the space for special occasions.

The kitchen features quartz countertops and a subway tile backsplash, a vintage touch perfectly fitting the space. New appliances include a Thermador refrigerator and microwave, a DCS six-burner range with pot filler, a Zephyr hood and a KitchenAid dishwasher. The mudroom just off the kitchen opens out to the patio between the main house and guest cottage for easy access to the kitchen when entertaining outside.

The original oak staircase leading to the basement is located nearby and the original fuse box is preserved at the top of the stairs. The clear knot cedar paneling is new and extends down to the daylight basement guest room and a completely new full bath. The space includes another new wood-burning fireplace and double doors that open to the front of the home. Also on this floor is a wine room and a laundry room with original textured plaster walls.

Past a narrow arched window with leaded glass, on the second floor, the guest bedroom. The crystal doorknobs found on this level are original to the home. The luxurious hall bath features an oversized glass door shower and new tile floors. The adjacent primary bedroom is oversized and includes a large walk-in closet with custom storage features. Make yourself comfortable with a good book on the inviting window seat with built-in storage.

Original elements combined with thoughtfully selected and expertly crafted new materials to create this home’s timeless appeal. Built just a few years after Oswego Lake Country Club and Lake Oswego Hunt Club, this property reflects Lake Oswego’s heritage. With a classic yet informal design, it’s reminiscent of the country homes and beach retreats of Cape Cod, Nantucket and the Hamptons with a special character that is only found in the Pacific Northwest.

Located in the coveted Uplands neighborhood, local highly-regarded schools include Forest Hills Elementary, Lake Oswego Middle and High School. Less than 10 minutes from here to the restaurants, shopping and community events in downtown Lake Oswego and just five minutes from the new Mercato Grove in Lake Grove. This location is ideal for commuting with easy access to freeways. The heart of downtown Portland is about a 20-minute drive, Nike World Headquarters is under 25 minutes and PDX is a little over 30 minutes away. This property includes access to four easements on Oswego Lake, including Goodin, Springbrook, Summit Court and the Forest Hills easement which includes picnic tables, a swing set, a slide, a diving board, a baby pool and lifeguards.
