Extend the season even further with the fantastic covered patio complete with a gas fireplace, an Infrared Dynamics patio heater and Pike Awnings retractable screens to semi-enclose the space without losing the view. When you’ve had enough sun and fun, step inside into a timelessly-designed home that has been continuously improved and enhanced with a talented designer’s touch.
Over the years since the homeowners bought the home from the builder, they’ve made careful improvements to the original design to ensure that the classically elegant home remained fresh and inviting. Built in the neighborhood that hosted the Tour of Elegance, this home boasts an open layout with the ideal spaces for celebrating special occasions and quiet evenings alike.
Tumbled travertine floors span most of the main floor with luxurious carpet elevating the living and dining room’s atmosphere. Located just off the two-story foyer where the sweeping staircase ascends to the second floor, the living room features a three-panel arched window overlooking the front of the home. The gas fireplace features a stone surround and a crisp, white traditional mantle that matches the wainscoting extending through to the dining room. A new Hudson Valley Group chandelier adds a hint of modern flair to the spacious dining room that can easily accommodate a table of eight or more. A trio of large windows overlooks the beautifully landscaped backyard designed by Toru Tanaka, a nationally-recognized Japanese landscape designer who served as the Portland Japanese Garden’s director.
The welcoming great room is warm and inviting with a kitchen that was tastefully updated with all-new hardware from Chown Hardware on the custom-built cabinetry by Hayes Cabinets. Topped with extra-thick bullnose-edge quartzite the kitchen cabinetry was carefully designed to maximize storage space including sliding storage solutions in corner cabinets and deep drawers for convenient organization. Top-of-the-line appliances include a five-burner Wolf cooktop, two 30” Wolf oven, a SubZero refrigerator, a Miele coffeemaker and a Wolf microwave. The wet bar in the great room includes wine storage, a sink and a SubZero wine fridge plus ample counter space for making drinks and serving appetizers. The light fixture in the breakfast nook matches those that hang over the central island for a stylish and cohesive look.
The great room is filled with light from two sets of French doors that lead outside to the backyard. Open the doors for a smooth flow indoors and out for entertaining on the expansive hardscape patios. The built-in cabinetry in the great room is white oak painted with a special technique to match the kitchen cabinets. This open, airy space features built-in speakers powered by a Sonos system which includes speakers that can be found throughout the home and outside.
Step out to the covered patio and outdoor kitchen where brick walls and a cedar plank ceiling bring warmth and texture to the space. A built-in Lynx BBQ and two additional cooktop burners are surrounded by soapstone countertops as is the adjacent workspace that includes a sink and a Lynx fridge. Clever cabinet doors cover a space for a tv for protection from the elements. A rustic mantle hangs above the gas fireplace and an Infrared Dynamics heater hangs above to supplement on chilly days. Retractable screens from Pike Awnings serve a dual purpose – keeping the space cool on hot days and trapping some of the heat inside on chilly ones making this a usable space year-round.
The hardscape patio features a tiered dining area for brunch al fresco surrounded by carefully curated plantings by Tanaka’s Japanese Garden Specialty team. As part of the last generation of landscapers to apprentice under Japan’s foremost landscape architects, Tanaka participated in the centuries-old custom of hands-on training from masters of the art. His specialty is integrating authentic Japanese landscape design with existing natural elements, a technique he utilized beautifully here with the existing hill that slopes up from the backyard. Tanaka designed the soothing waterfall feature, planted grasses, shrubs and Japanese maples that bring countless shades of green and pops of color to this private haven. Retaining walls form the lower level of planting beds beautifully illuminated by landscape lighting. Another tiered patio rises six broad steps and includes a large fire pit and plenty of space for gathering around it. The patio extends all the way across the back of the house providing enough space for a large party or room to play. The plant pots that add height and texture to the space are plumbed with irrigation as is the front and back yard.
Inside, the main floor also includes a large office with huge windows overlooking the front yard. Wainscot detail serves to elevate the formality of the space and built-in cabinetry provides a place for office equipment and supplies. The nearby powder room was recently redone and features textural Island Stone Tile and gorgeous countertops from Milan Stoneworks. Just around the corner is a large laundry room with ample space for crafting and projects as well as storage.
Upstairs are three bedrooms including the recently enlarged primary suite. This peaceful haven includes a spacious sitting room with a gas fireplace with a stone surround and a warm, wood, ceiling-height mantle with flanking bookcases. The sitting room also includes an office nook with three large windows for natural light. Travertine floors extend through the broadly arched entryway to the bedroom. Tray ceilings enhance the open feeling of this space which features windows on two walls framing a lush, treetop view. The ensuite bath is luxurious with an extra-deep 90-gallon capacity Jacuzzi jetted tub and a walk-in shower featuring a Pompeii Marble slab and storage nooks. The mirrors that hang above the dual vanity are custom-made and the fixtures are Santec. The walk-in closet is oversized and features custom organization solutions.
Just down the hall are two guest bedrooms, one of which includes an ensuite bath with a walk-in shower. Above the garage is a comfortable bonus room with dormer windows and a separate flexible use space for hobbies or storage.
